Spotify Data Sharing Permissions

2018

To enable Spotify to be controlled on a device by any third party voice assistant -including Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Microsoft Cortana and Samsung Bixby - Spotify customers need to give permission for their account data to be shared.

Together with the UX writing and Legal teams I completely re-wrote and grouped the Spotify third party data permissions to make them easier to understand and GDPR compliant. I also redesigned all the screens in the oauth flow to align with the Spotify web design language system.

I collaborated with a team at Google to remove the need for Spotify customers to log in to a web view to give permission to share their data. This dramatically increases the likelihood of people completing this flow.

“Alex successfully drove the oauth project forward; which is important for the business but not a ‘cool’ problem to solve and so building that momentum was very challenging.” - Chris Bennett, Spotify Legal
